Purpose

This project immerses students in the critical field of workplace safety, equipping them with the skills to design industry-specific safety plans. By engaging with community partners, students gain firsthand experience and insights into safety protocols, hazard identification, and the creation of a safety-conscious culture. Through hands-on activities, peer collaboration, and real-world applications, students develop a comprehensive understanding of safety responsibilities and the socio-emotional skills necessary to maintain a safe working environment.

Learning goals

Students will develop the ability to design comprehensive workplace safety plans tailored to specific industries by integrating knowledge from OSHA workshops and real-world experiences at a local manufacturing plant. They will enhance their skills in identifying workplace hazards and using personal protective equipment effectively, as demonstrated through hands-on audits and simulations. Additionally, students will cultivate socio-emotional skills necessary for fostering a culture of safety, as evidenced by their collaboration with local business mentors and participation in peer review activities.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.7: Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.4: Present information, findings, and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
  • NGSS - HS-ETS1-1: Analyze a major global challenge to specify qualitative and quantitative criteria and constraints for solutions that account for societal needs and wants.

Products

Students will create a digital safety handbook featuring interactive videos and quizzes that provide comprehensive workplace safety guidelines tailored to various industries. They will also develop a virtual reality simulation for identifying hazards and practicing safety protocols in real-time. Additionally, students will produce a documentary film capturing their journey in fostering a culture of safety in collaboration with local businesses. Finally, they will design educational posters and infographics illustrating key safety concepts and personal protective equipment usage, to be displayed at the Safety Expo.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a dynamic 'Safety Skills Bootcamp' led by local OSHA representatives. This event will feature hands-on workshops and demonstrations focused on personal protective equipment and hazard identification. Students will engage in interactive activities that enhance their practical skills and knowledge, setting the stage for the project. This immersive launch will inspire curiosity and provide a solid foundation for the comprehensive workplace safety plan they will develop.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Safety Symposium' where they present their digital safety handbooks, virtual reality simulations, and documentary films to an audience of local OSHA representatives, business owners, and community members. Interactive booths at the 'Safety Expo' will feature educational posters and infographics, allowing attendees to engage with students' comprehensive workplace safety plans. These events provide a platform for students to showcase their work, receive feedback, and celebrate their achievements in creating a culture of safety.
