Purpose
The purpose of this project is to engage high school students in exploring the critical balance between digital safety and creative freedom through immersive, hands-on activities. By creating multimedia projects, students will deepen their understanding of how to communicate these concepts effectively within their school community. Throughout the project, students will enhance their critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, while actively participating in discussions with community partners to gain diverse perspectives. The project aims to foster a safe and responsible digital environment that encourages creativity and innovation.
Learning goals
Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills by exploring the balance between digital safety and creative freedom through multimedia projects. They will enhance their communication abilities by articulating their thoughts during panel discussions and peer review sessions. Through role-playing scenarios and interactions with community partners, students will deepen their understanding of digital safety challenges and creative solutions. Reflective practices will encourage students to continuously evaluate their learning and growth throughout the project.
Standards
- Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.6: Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others.
- Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.1: Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.

Products
Students will create a digital zine that showcases their reflections, artwork, and interviews with community partners on balancing digital safety and creative freedom. This zine will be displayed at the Digital Safety Expo, providing an interactive platform for sharing their insights with the school community. Additionally, students will develop multimedia projects that communicate the importance of digital safety and creative freedom, which will be featured at the expo in engaging and informative booths.
Launch
Begin the project with an immersive 'Virtual Reality Exploration' session, where students use VR headsets to navigate scenarios emphasizing digital safety and creative freedom. This interactive experience will ignite curiosity and set the stage for the project, encouraging students to think critically about the balance between these concepts. Through this launch activity, students will gain firsthand understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the digital realm, laying a foundation for their multimedia projects.
Exhibition
Organize a 'Digital Safety Expo' where students present interactive booths showcasing their multimedia projects. Each booth will feature elements from their digital zine, including reflections, artwork, and interviews, allowing attendees to explore the balance between digital safety and creative freedom. Students will engage with peers, teachers, and community members, fostering dialogue and understanding about the impact of digital safety on creative expression. The expo will culminate in a panel discussion where students articulate their challenges and strategies, highlighting their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
