"Land Rhythm Revelations: Explore, Create, Regenerate!"

Sacha Ray

Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage young learners in a hands-on exploration of natural systems, fostering a deep connection with the land and its rhythms. Through sensory exploration, creative design, and collaborative problem-solving, students will develop a holistic understanding of environmental stewardship and regenerative practices. By partnering with community members and experts, learners will co-create meaningful solutions that honor the needs of their environment, while reflecting on their personal growth and the impact of their contributions. This project aims to cultivate a sense of responsibility and interconnectedness, empowering students to become thoughtful caretakers of the natural world.

Learning goals

Learners will develop a deep understanding of natural systems and cycles, enhancing their ability to observe and document environmental changes. They will cultivate skills in design thinking, prototyping, and collaboration, applying these to create regenerative solutions that support the land and community. Through storytelling and reflection, students will articulate their personal growth and the impact of their contributions, fostering a sense of stewardship and interconnectedness with the environment.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.7: Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.4: Present information, findings, and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
  • NGSS - 3-LS4-4: Make a claim about the merit of a solution to a problem caused when the environment changes and the types of plants and animals that live there may change.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create a portfolio that includes sketches, maps, journals, and prototypes, documenting their learning journey and understanding of natural systems. They will also collaborate on a mural representing observed natural systems and cycles, integrating personal growth insights. By the end, students will prepare dishes for a 'Harvest of Gratitude' community meal using produce from their projects, sharing their experiences through storytelling and presentations. Additionally, they will produce video or photo essays capturing the long-term impact of their contributions during a 'Legacy Walk'.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'Rhythms of the Land' workshop, inviting indigenous elders to share traditional stories and practices that connect learners to the land's cycles. Engage students in sensory exploration walks on local farms, where they observe and document natural systems through drawing and journaling activities. Host a collaborative session for learners to map out their curiosities and questions about the environment, laying the foundation for their project journey.

Exhibition

Host a 'Harvest of Gratitude' community meal where students prepare dishes using produce from their projects, sharing their learning experiences and reflections with guests through storytelling and presentations. Organize an exhibition where students display their portfolios, murals, and video/photo essays, showcasing their journey and the impact of their regenerative solutions. Invite community partners, families, and local stakeholders to participate in a collaborative reflection workshop, where learners present their projects and receive feedback, celebrating the collective growth and contributions to the land and community.
