Positivity Prism: Mapping Musical Mood Magic!
Purpose
Students will engage in a comprehensive exploration of language's impact by analyzing the prevalence and effects of positive and negative words in music, media, and their community. They will use probability, ratios, and percent calculations to predict language trends and develop strategies for fostering positivity. Through partnerships with community organizations like assisted living homes and hospitals, students will create a positive vibes playlist and a 3D model designed to spread positivity. This project encourages students to reflect on the essential question, "Why do words matter?" and actively contribute to their community's well-being. Additionally, students will analyze patterns in data to determine proportional relationships and use these insights to predict future trends in language use and its impact on mood and community well-being.
Learning goals
Students will analyze data to understand the impact of language in music, media, and community, focusing on the prevalence of positive and negative words. They will develop skills in probability, ratios, and proportional reasoning, applying these to predict interactions and create a positive environment. Through collaboration with community partners, students will create and share a positive vibes playlist and a 3D figure, promoting positivity in real-world contexts. Students will also learn to calculate volume and surface area of composite prisms, circle area and circumference, and solve percent problems related to their data collection. This project aims to enhance students' critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills while fostering a deeper understanding of the power of language and its influence on mood and mental health.

Products
Students will create a "Positive Vibes Playlist" by analyzing and selecting music with uplifting lyrics, using probability calculations to determine the percentage of positive phrases. They will design a 3D figure that symbolizes positivity, applying their knowledge of volume and surface area to construct composite prisms. Additionally, students will suggest positive YouTube channels based on their analysis of positive and negative terms, using ratio models to present their findings. The class will collaborate with community partners, such as assisted living homes and hospitals, to share these creations and foster a positive atmosphere. Throughout the project, students will document their findings and reflections in a digital portfolio to showcase their learning journey and its impact on the community.
Launch
Begin the project with a dynamic "Words Matter" scavenger hunt, where students investigate their school, community, and online spaces to collect data on positive and negative language. Facilitate discussions on the impact of these words and introduce the essential question, "Why do words matter?" Incorporate core content by having students calculate the probability of encountering positive versus negative words and analyze patterns in their findings. Collaborate with community partners like assisted living homes or therapy centers to understand real-world implications of language on well-being, setting the stage for meaningful exploration and collaboration throughout the project.
Exhibition
Students will host a community showcase event, presenting their findings on the impact of words in music, media, and community interactions through graphical displays and data analysis. They will share their positive vibes playlist and unveil their 3D figures designed to foster a positive atmosphere, demonstrating their understanding of volume and surface area. Inviting community partners such as local assisted living homes, rehab centers, and hospitals, students will engage attendees in discussions about the importance of positive language and the probability of encountering it in various contexts. The event will feature interactive stations where guests can experience the students' projects firsthand, provide feedback, and participate in activities that promote positive mental health and well-being.
