Purpose

Students will engage in a hands-on exploration of ancient Egyptian civilization, focusing on how they innovatively adapted to their environment using available resources and technologies. Through collaborative activities, students will investigate the methods Egyptians used for agriculture, architecture, and transportation, and how these contributed to their survival and prosperity. This project aims to deepen students' understanding of historical ingenuity and foster skills in research, critical thinking, and teamwork.

Learning goals

Students will investigate how ancient Egyptians utilized the Nile River and developed technologies such as irrigation systems to thrive in their environment. They will analyze the relationship between geography and societal development, focusing on how natural resources influenced daily life and survival strategies. Through collaborative group activities, students will create models or simulations to demonstrate their understanding of ancient Egyptian innovations.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.7.7: Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions for further research and investigation.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.6-8.7: Integrate visual information (e.g., charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts.
  • NGSS - MS-ESS3-3: Apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing a human impact on the environment.

Products

Students will work in small groups to create a 3D model of an ancient Egyptian settlement, incorporating elements such as irrigation systems, housing, and agriculture. Each group will research and present on a specific technology or method used by the Egyptians to adapt to their environment. The project will culminate in a gallery walk where students showcase their models and share insights on how these innovations contributed to the survival and prosperity of ancient Egyptian society.

Launch

Begin the project with a hands-on activity where students create a simple model of the Nile River using sand, water, and small plants to simulate the ancient Egyptian environment. As they construct their models, prompt students to consider how the river's resources might have influenced Egyptian survival strategies. Encourage them to brainstorm and discuss the various technologies and methods Egyptians could have developed to harness these resources effectively. This tactile experience will set the stage for exploring the essential question throughout the week.

Exhibition

Students will create a multimedia exhibit showcasing ancient Egyptian methods and technologies used for survival. They will design interactive displays, including models of irrigation systems, replicas of tools, and digital presentations on mummification techniques. The exhibit will be open to peers, teachers, and family members, allowing students to explain their research and discoveries. This exhibition will serve as a culmination of their week-long exploration, highlighting their understanding and creativity.
