Purpose

Students will collaboratively design and build a Minecraft world that illustrates the life cycle of plants and animals, integrating Spanish vocabulary to describe each stage. This project will enable students to apply math skills in measuring and calculating dimensions within their virtual world, while exploring scientific concepts related to biology and ecosystems. Through hands-on creation and exploration, students will deepen their understanding of interdisciplinary connections, fostering creativity and language skills in a dynamic, interactive environment.

Learning goals

Students will learn to collaboratively design a Minecraft world that illustrates the life cycle of plants and animals, integrating Spanish vocabulary to describe each stage. They will apply math skills to measure and calculate areas within their Minecraft world, ensuring accurate representation of habitats. Through scientific exploration, students will understand the interdependence of organisms and ecosystems, utilizing critical thinking to solve challenges in their virtual environment. This project encourages creativity, teamwork, and communication as students present their Minecraft world to peers, demonstrating their understanding in both Spanish and English.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.B.4: Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units—whole numbers, halves, or quarters.
  • Next Generation Science Standards - 3-LS1-1: Develop models to describe that organisms have unique and diverse life cycles but all have in common birth, growth, reproduction, and death.
  • ACTFL World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages - Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and build a Minecraft world that visually represents the life cycle of a plant and an animal, incorporating Spanish vocabulary labels for each stage. They will create a digital presentation or video tour of their Minecraft world, explaining the life cycles and the Spanish terms used. Additionally, students will compile a bilingual glossary booklet featuring key vocabulary and concepts learned throughout the project.

Launch

Begin the project by inviting students to explore a pre-built Minecraft world that features various plant and animal life cycles. Encourage them to identify and discuss the stages they observe using Spanish vocabulary. Facilitate a class discussion on how these life cycles are interconnected and how they can be represented creatively in their own Minecraft worlds. This activity will spark curiosity and set the stage for the project by combining exploration with language learning.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Minecraft World Showcase" where they present their digital creations to classmates, teachers, and parents. Each group will guide visitors through their Minecraft world, explaining the life cycle of plants and animals in Spanish, highlighting key vocabulary and scientific concepts. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, encouraging students to articulate their learning and demonstrate their understanding in both science and language.
