Buggy Bilingual Animation Adventure!

Isidora Salome Cruz Araya

Purpose

This project aims to engage first-grade students in a creative exploration of 2D animation, blending artistic expression with language and math skills. By designing animations that feature insects in a garden and friendship stories, students will learn to use Spanish vocabulary and basic math concepts in meaningful contexts. The project fosters collaboration, creativity, and communication, encouraging students to express their ideas visually while developing foundational skills in animation, language, and mathematics.

Learning goals

Students will learn the basics of 2D animation by creating simple characters and movement sequences, using digital tools or paper cutouts. They will apply Spanish vocabulary to label elements within their animations and integrate math concepts such as counting and addition. Through storytelling, students will explore themes of friendship and social skills, enhancing their understanding of classroom manners and how to make friends. By collaborating in pairs, students will develop teamwork and communication skills, culminating in a presentation at the Animation Fiesta.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.A.1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.1.4: Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly.
  • Common Core - CCSS.W.1.6: With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.

Products

Students will create two short 2D animations. The first animation will feature insects in a garden, labeled with Spanish words and incorporating math concepts like counting. The second animation will tell a friendship story using Spanish greetings and emotions, illustrating how many friends join the group. Both animations will be presented at an 'Animation Fiesta' for classmates and parents.

Launch

Begin the project with an interactive storytelling session where students listen to a short animated story about insects in a garden, featuring Spanish words and basic math concepts. Afterward, have students explore a real or virtual garden to identify insects and count them, practicing Spanish vocabulary. This hands-on experience will inspire their animations and provide a tangible connection to the project's themes.

Exhibition

Invite classmates and parents to an 'Animation Fiesta' where students present their animations on a big screen. Each pair will explain their animation's story, highlighting the Spanish vocabulary and math concepts they used. This celebration will provide an opportunity for students to share their creative work and learning experiences in a festive and supportive environment.
