Purpose

This project aims to immerse students in the rich tapestry of American history by exploring the interactions between American Indians and European settlers through hands-on, real-world experiences. Students will engage in critical inquiry, cultural exchanges, and creative storytelling to understand the complexities of these historical relationships and their lasting impact on modern society. By integrating themes of resilience and adaptation from 'Counting By 7's', students will connect historical narratives to their own lives, fostering a deeper appreciation for diverse perspectives and the enduring influence of cultural heritage.

Learning goals

Students will develop an understanding of the historical interactions between European explorers and American Indian cultures, analyzing their lasting impact on modern society. They will enhance their critical thinking and communication skills by conducting research, creating multimedia presentations, and engaging in peer review sessions. Products

Students will create a digital storytelling project using multimedia tools to craft interactive narratives about key historical figures during European colonization. They will also develop visual displays and maps depicting the geography of the United States during this period, highlighting significant interactions between American Indians and Europeans. Additionally, students will participate in a cultural exchange event, presenting traditional crafts and artifacts learned from Native American partners, alongside their research findings on European exploration.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Cultural Connections Day,' where students engage in hands-on workshops led by Native American community partners.
