Purpose

Students will lead explorations into the impact of digital devices on adolescent brain development and body systems, focusing on neurological, psychological, and hormonal effects. Through student-driven investigations and data analysis, they will develop scientific models and action plans to understand and manage their relationship with technology. The project encourages students to engage in critical thinking and ethical decision-making, guiding them to create personal and community-based strategies for healthier digital habits, informed by their own data collection and reflections. Students will design and conduct an investigation to collect data on device usage impacts, culminating in a presentation of findings and proposed wellness initiatives for their school community.

Learning goals

Students will lead investigations into the effects of digital devices on the adolescent brain and body, developing systems thinking and scientific inquiry skills. They will independently design and conduct data collection on device usage, using their findings to create personalized action plans for healthier technology relationships. By collaborating with community partners, students will propose initiatives to enhance digital wellness within their school. They will construct explanatory models to demonstrate their understanding of neurological and endocrine system interactions, while reflecting on their learning to inform broader community impact.

Products

Students will take the lead in creating a comprehensive portfolio that includes visual explanatory models illustrating the impact of cell phones on teenage brains, personal action plans for reducing device use, and data analyses comparing personal and community device usage. They will design and share an action plan that proposes wellness and sustainability initiatives informed by their investigations. Students will engage with community partners to present their findings and action plans, fostering discussions on how these insights can benefit the wider school community.

Launch

Begin the project with a "Digital Detox Challenge," where students collaboratively design and lead a day without digital devices, documenting their experiences and reflections in journals. This student-led activity will ignite discussions on digital dependency and lay the groundwork for exploring the neurological and physiological impacts of screen use. Encourage students to invite a guest speaker from the Digital Wellness Lab, allowing them to take ownership of the learning experience while gaining insights into digital addiction science and strategies for healthier tech habits.

Exhibition

Students will lead a Digital Wellness Fair, inviting peers, teachers, and community partners such as The Luddite Club, Digital Wellness Lab, and NYC Teenspace to engage in discussions and provide feedback. Each student will independently showcase their visual explanatory model of how cell phones impact teenage brains, alongside their personal reflections and proposed strategies for healthier device use. Attendees will interact with the students' data-driven insights, exploring both individual and collective approaches to fostering mental and physical well-being in the school community, with students facilitating discussions and activities throughout the event.
