"Storycraft: Unleash Emotions & Personal Tales"
Purpose
Students will explore the art of narrative writing by crafting their own fictional stories and personal narratives, focusing on how language and structure evoke emotions and convey messages. Through collaborative workshops, peer reviews, and guided writing sessions, students will develop their storytelling skills, drawing connections between fictional and personal storytelling. The project culminates in a storytelling showcase, where students present their narratives to the class, celebrating diverse voices and perspectives.
Learning goals
Students will explore how authors use language and structure to evoke emotions and convey messages by analyzing various narrative texts. They will apply these techniques in crafting their own fictional narratives and personal recounts, focusing on character development, plot structure, and descriptive language. Students will compare and contrast the elements of fictional and personal narratives, gaining a deeper understanding of narrative writing. Through peer review and collaborative workshops, students will refine their writing and presentation skills, culminating in a final project where they share their stories with the class.
Standards
- Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
- Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.6: Describe how a narrator’s or speaker’s point of view influences how events are described.
- Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
Products
Students will craft two main products: a fictional narrative and a personal narrative. Throughout the project, they will engage in activities such as story mapping, peer feedback sessions, and character development workshops. By the end of the project, students will compile their narratives into a class anthology, which they will present in a storytelling showcase to their peers and families.
Launch
Begin the project by inviting students to participate in a "Storytelling Circle," where they share a short personal story with a partner, focusing on a memorable event or emotion. Encourage them to pay attention to how their partner uses language to convey feelings and details. Afterward, discuss as a class the different techniques observed and how these might be used in fictional narratives. This activity will set the stage for exploring the essential questions and spark curiosity about the art of narrative writing.
Exhibition
Students will host a "Storytelling Showcase" where they present their fictional narratives and personal experience recounts to classmates, teachers, and family members. Each student will create a visual storyboard or digital presentation that highlights key elements of their story, such as character development, plot structure, and emotional impact. During the showcase, students will engage in peer feedback sessions, offering constructive insights and reflections on each other's work. This event will culminate in a group discussion, allowing students to compare the narrative techniques used in both types of writing and explore the essential questions together.
