Migration Map Quest Mania!
Purpose
The purpose of this project is to explore the historical migration of Mexican settlers into the West and Southwest territories, while developing skills in making connections and inferences. Through hands-on activities, you will uncover the challenges faced by these settlers and draw parallels to the experiences of modern migrants. This project aims to deepen your understanding of historical events and their lasting impacts on society today, fostering a more comprehensive socio-emotional perspective.
Learning goals
Your learning goals for this project include understanding the migration routes and experiences of Mexican settlers in the West and Southwest territories. You will develop skills in making connections and inferences by comparing historical challenges faced by these settlers to those experienced by migrants today. Additionally, you will enhance your research abilities using primary and secondary sources, and improve your ability to synthesize information into a coherent narrative. Through creating multimedia presentations and interactive experiences, you will also refine your skills in communication and digital literacy.
Standards

Products
You will create a life-sized map with augmented reality features, allowing visitors to explore additional content about the settlers' migration journey using tablets or smartphones. Additionally, you will produce a multimedia presentation that illustrates the journey of Mexican settlers through maps, images, and narratives. This presentation will also highlight the connections and inferences you've made between historical and modern migration experiences. Finally, you will design an interactive 'Migration Map Quest' experience, guiding visitors through key events and encouraging them to reflect on their own connections.
Launch
Begin your project by participating in the 'Map Makers' workshop, where you will collaboratively create large maps that trace the routes of Mexican settlers. Use historical facts and personal reflections to enrich your maps, helping to set the stage for understanding the migration journey. This hands-on activity will engage you in exploring the historical context and spark curiosity about the challenges faced by settlers.
Exhibition
Guide visitors through your 'Migration Map Quest' interactive experience by leading them along the life-sized map you created. At each checkpoint, share key events and insights about the Mexican settlers' journey, encouraging visitors to reflect on their own connections to migration stories. Use augmented reality features to enhance the exhibition, allowing guests to explore additional content with tablets or smartphones. Facilitate discussions where visitors can express their thoughts and draw parallels between historical and modern migration challenges.
