Purpose

This project aims to equip 6th-grade students with the skills to set and achieve SMART goals by leveraging their personal strengths and addressing challenges. Through hands-on activities and real-world examples, students will develop a deeper understanding of how their identities influence their choices and outcomes. By engaging with community partners and leading workshops, students will gain practical experience in goal-setting, reflection, and adjustment, fostering self-awareness and resilience.

Learning goals

Students will learn to set and achieve SMART goals by identifying and leveraging their personal strengths and addressing challenges. They will develop a digital portfolio to track their progress, using multimedia tools to reflect and adjust their strategies. Through weekly check-ins and a personal reflection journal, students will refine their goal-setting skills and gain insights into how their identities influence their choices. By leading a workshop for younger peers and collaborating with community partners, students will deepen their understanding of goal-setting in real-world contexts.
Standards
  • 1B.3a - Develop a plan and prioritize steps in working toward a goal.
  • 1B.3a - Identify how their personal strengths, challenges, experiences, and identities influence choices and outcomes.
  • 1B.3b - Monitor progress on a shortterm goal and make necessary adjustments to their plan to work toward their goal.

Products

Students will create a digital portfolio that documents their SMART goal-setting journey, including multimedia reflections and adjustments made along the way. They will also develop a personal reflection journal to capture insights on their strengths and challenges, culminating in a comprehensive self-evaluation. For the exhibition, students will produce visual displays for the 'Goal-Setting Gallery Walk,' showcasing their goals, progress, and reflections. Additionally, they will prepare presentations for the 'Goal-Setting Workshop,' where they share their experiences and strategies with younger peers.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Goal Quest' scavenger hunt, where students collaborate in teams to solve clues related to setting and achieving goals. Each clue will reveal insights into how personal strengths and challenges can shape their paths. This engaging activity will stimulate curiosity and encourage students to consider how their unique qualities influence their goal-setting journey.

Exhibition

Students will present their learning journey in a 'Goal-Setting Gallery Walk,' where they showcase visual displays of their SMART goals, progress, and reflections. Each student will create a multimedia presentation, incorporating digital portfolio highlights and personal reflection journals. Parents, guardians, and community partners will be invited to tour the exhibits, engaging in meaningful conversations with students about their experiences and insights gained. This interactive exhibition will allow students to articulate their understanding of goal-setting and celebrate their achievements with the community.
