Purpose

This project aims to engage first-grade students in a hands-on learning experience where they explore the practical application of mathematics and language skills through the real-world task of building a pet shelter. By collecting and evaluating materials, students will deepen their understanding of measurement and descriptive language while developing problem-solving and collaboration skills. The project fosters creativity and empathy as students consider the needs of animals, culminating in a presentation that builds confidence and communication skills.

Learning goals

Students will learn to identify and evaluate various materials based on their properties, such as strength and weather resistance, to determine their suitability for building a pet shelter. They will develop measurement skills by accurately measuring and describing materials, fostering mathematical understanding through practical application. Through collaboration, students will enhance their communication and teamwork abilities, while reflecting on their learning process to improve problem-solving skills. The project will also nurture creativity and critical thinking as students design and construct a functional shelter, culminating in a presentation that builds confidence and storytelling skills.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.A.1: Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.1.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.

Products

Students will design and construct a small pet shelter using collected materials, ensuring it is sturdy and weather-resistant. They will create a short video or photo journal documenting their building process, highlighting the selection and measurement of materials. The final product will be presented during 'Shelter Storytime,' where students will narrate their building journey to visiting kindergarten classes, showcasing their shelters and sharing the features and benefits with their younger peers.

Launch

Embark on a 'Material Hunt Adventure' where students explore the school grounds or classroom to gather an assortment of natural and recyclable materials. Engage them in discussions about the properties and potential uses of these materials for constructing a pet shelter. Encourage students to share their discoveries and ideas, setting the stage for the hands-on building project.

Exhibition

Invite kindergarten classes to a 'Shelter Storytime' event where first graders present their pet shelters. Each student will narrate their building journey using their video or photo journal, highlighting the materials they chose and the shelter's features. This event will not only showcase their hard work but also encourage them to take pride in their creations while engaging younger students in learning about shelter construction.
