Minecraft Math: Bilingual Adventure Village

Isidora Salome Cruz Araya

Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse second-grade students in a bilingual, interactive learning experience that combines math problem-solving with language practice in a Minecraft setting. By engaging with addition and subtraction challenges in both Spanish and English, students will develop their bilingual communication skills and mathematical reasoning. Through collaboration and creativity, they will build a Minecraft village that reflects their understanding of math concepts and language use, fostering a deeper connection to both subjects.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project include developing bilingual communication skills by solving math problems in both Spanish and English within a Minecraft environment. Students will enhance their understanding of addition and subtraction through interactive, real-world applications, fostering collaborative problem-solving and critical thinking. Additionally, students will build digital literacy by creating a digital portfolio and participating in virtual exhibitions, while also reflecting on their learning process and strategies used.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.A.1: Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.4: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies.

Products

Throughout the project, students will collaboratively design and build a Minecraft village featuring math-themed landmarks such as 'Sum Square' and 'Subtraction Street.' These landmarks will include bilingual signs and instructions, integrating both Spanish and English. By the end of the week, students will have created a digital portfolio showcasing their Minecraft math activities, complete with bilingual reflections and problem-solving strategies. The final product will be a 'Virtual Village Tour,' where students guide family members through their Minecraft creations, narrating their experiences and solutions in both languages.

Launch

Begin the project with an interactive 'Virtual Village Exploration' where students navigate a pre-built Minecraft village featuring math-themed landmarks. As they explore, students will solve math riddles and challenges presented in both Spanish and English, fostering a bilingual learning environment. This immersive experience will spark curiosity and set the stage for collaborative village-building, encouraging students to think creatively about how math can be integrated into their Minecraft world.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Virtual Village Tour' where they invite family members to join a video call and explore their collaboratively built Minecraft village. During the tour, students will narrate their experiences and strategies in both Spanish and English, showcasing the math-themed landmarks they have created. This exhibition allows students to demonstrate their bilingual problem-solving skills and creativity, while engaging their audience in an interactive and educational experience.
