1-pager
Purpose
In this project, students will engage as historians, songwriters, and performers to reinterpret traditional American songs, reflecting modern values and diverse perspectives. Through this creative process, they will explore how music shapes our understanding of patriotism and national identity, while examining the symbols that represent American culture. By crafting and performing original songs, students will tell new stories about America, using music as a tool to investigate and express their personal and collective views on American ideals. This hands-on experience will deepen their comprehension of the U.S. Constitution's principles and the role of music in communicating American identity and values.
Learning goals
Students will explore the influence of music on American patriotism and national identity by analyzing traditional songs and creating their own compositions that reflect modern values and diverse perspectives. They will investigate symbols of American culture and assess their representation in music, while considering personal connections to these symbols. Through collaborative songwriting and performance, students will critically engage with the concept of patriotism and express their understanding of American identity and values.

Launch
Kick off the project by hosting a "Musical Time Capsule" event where students listen to and discuss iconic American songs, such as "America the Beautiful" and "The Star-Spangled Banner." Encourage students to reflect on the emotions and messages conveyed in these songs and how they relate to American ideals. Facilitate a class discussion on how these songs represent American culture and whether students feel represented by them. This activity will set the stage for students to explore and reinterpret these songs to reflect modern values and diverse perspectives.
Exhibition
Students will host a "Reimagining American Ideals" concert, where they will perform their original songs that reinterpret traditional American anthems. Each performance will be accompanied by a brief presentation, where students explain the symbols and stories embedded in their songs, highlighting how these reflect modern values and diverse perspectives. The event will include a gallery walk showcasing student-created visual art pieces that represent American culture and identity, inviting attendees to engage with the essential questions explored throughout the project.
