Purpose

Engage in a dynamic exploration of chemical reactions by investigating how substances change when they interact. Develop models to visualize the atomic composition of molecules and analyze data to determine the occurrence of chemical reactions. Through hands-on experiments and collaborative discussions, deepen your understanding of molecular structures and the transformative nature of chemical processes.

Learning goals

Engage in hands-on experiments to observe and document the changes in properties of substances before and after chemical reactions. Develop and use models to describe the atomic composition of molecules and structures, enhancing your understanding of chemical reactions. Analyze and interpret data to determine the occurrence of chemical reactions, using evidence from your experiments. Collaborate with peers to visualize and communicate the changes observed during chemical reactions through creative presentations or models.
Standards
  • MS-PS1-1 - Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures.
  • MS-PS1-2 - Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.

Products

Throughout this project, create detailed molecular models using everyday materials to represent the atomic composition of substances before and after chemical reactions. Document your observations and data in a digital lab notebook, highlighting changes in properties. By the end of the project, prepare a visual presentation that illustrates your findings, including a comparison of initial and resulting substances, and present it to your peers for feedback.

Launch

Begin your project with an engaging demonstration of a simple chemical reaction, such as combining vinegar and baking soda to create an erupting volcano effect. As you observe the reaction, consider the essential question: "In what ways do the properties of substances change when they undergo a chemical reaction, and how can we visualize these changes?" Discuss initial observations and predictions about the atomic composition and property changes. This will set the stage for developing models and analyzing data throughout the project.

Exhibition

Organize a "Chemical Reaction Fair" where you present models and demonstrations of chemical reactions you have explored. Create visual displays that illustrate the atomic composition of molecules before and after reactions, using materials like clay or digital tools for 3D modeling. Facilitate interactive stations where visitors can observe and discuss the changes in properties of substances, supported by data you have collected and analyzed. Invite peers, teachers, and family members to engage with your findings and provide feedback on your interpretations. This event will allow you to showcase your understanding and creativity in visualizing chemical changes.
