Purpose

Dive into the fascinating world of chemical reactions by designing and conducting your own experiments. Over the next three weeks, you'll explore how substances transform at the atomic level, developing models to visualize these changes. Through hands-on activities, you'll gather evidence to identify chemical reactions, culminating in a live demonstration and a Science Showdown event. This project will challenge you to think critically and creatively, as you collaborate with peers to deepen your understanding of chemistry.

Learning goals

Develop a deep understanding of chemical reactions by designing experiments that model atomic composition changes. Enhance skills in analyzing and interpreting data to identify evidence of chemical reactions. Build confidence in presenting scientific findings through live demonstrations and peer-reviewed exhibitions. Foster collaboration and critical thinking by participating in a competitive 'Science Showdown' event. Reflect on your learning journey by creating a visual timeline that captures key discoveries and insights.
Standards
  • MS-PS1-1 - Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures.
  • MS-PS1-2 - Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.

Products

You will create a detailed lab notebook documenting your experimental design, observations, and data analysis for each chemical reaction you investigate. Develop a digital presentation that includes models of atomic composition changes, using diagrams and animations to illustrate your findings. As a final product, prepare a comprehensive report that synthesizes your learning, including your visual timeline, and reflects on the evidence gathered to determine chemical reactions.

Launch

Kick off the project with an engaging "Chemical Reaction Mystery Box" challenge. You'll receive a box containing various household substances and materials to explore. Your task is to conduct initial experiments to observe and document any changes, sparking curiosity about chemical reactions. Use this activity to brainstorm questions and predictions about the atomic composition changes you might investigate further. This hands-on exploration sets the stage for deeper inquiry and experimentation throughout the project.

Exhibition

Organize a 'Science Showdown' event where you and your peers present your chemical reaction demonstrations in a competition format. Invite a panel of science teachers and peers to judge the presentations based on creativity, clarity of explanation, and understanding of atomic composition changes. Collaborate with classmates to set up engaging and informative displays that showcase your experiments and findings. Use this opportunity to articulate your learning journey and the evidence you gathered to determine chemical reactions. Celebrate your achievements and gain valuable insights from feedback provided by the judges and audience.
