Purpose
The purpose of this project is to engage students in understanding the impact of plastic pollution on local beaches and wildlife through hands-on learning experiences. Students will explore community challenges related to plastic waste and apply STEM concepts to develop creative solutions. By collaborating with local partners, they will organize a beach clean-up event, fostering a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the environment. This project aims to inspire students to take actionable steps in reducing plastic use and protecting marine ecosystems.
Learning goals
Students will explore the impact of plastic pollution on local beaches and marine life, while developing skills in identifying community challenges and proposing solutions using STEM concepts. They will engage in creating educational materials to raise awareness within their community, fostering communication and collaboration skills. Through hands-on activities, students will learn the importance of environmental stewardship and participate in a beach clean-up, applying their knowledge in a real-world context.

Products

Launch
Kick off the project with an interactive presentation from a Shedd Aquarium educator, who will introduce students to the effects of plastic pollution on local marine life. Follow this with a hands-on activity where students sort and categorize different types of plastic waste, discussing their potential impact on the environment. Conclude the launch by brainstorming ideas for the beach clean-up event, encouraging students to think creatively about ways to make it engaging and informative for the community.
Exhibition
At the end of the project, students will host a community beach clean-up event where they will showcase their informational flyers and digital presentations. They will set up interactive stations where attendees can learn about the impact of plastic pollution, participate in hands-on activities related to reducing plastic waste, and engage with Shedd Aquarium representatives. Students will lead small group discussions to share their findings and innovative solutions, fostering a collaborative atmosphere that encourages community members to take action.
