Colombian Geometry: Wildlife Wonders Parade
Purpose
The purpose of this project is to immerse young learners in the vibrant culture and biodiversity of Colombia through interactive and creative activities. By exploring geometric shapes in indigenous art and observing Colombian wildlife, children will develop an appreciation for diversity and nature. The project fosters sensory engagement, artistic expression, and community involvement, culminating in a collaborative art display that celebrates their learning journey.
Learning goals
The learning goals for this project include recognizing and identifying geometric shapes in Colombian indigenous art and wildlife, fostering creativity through hands-on art creation, and developing an understanding of Colombian biodiversity. Children will engage in sensory exploration to enhance tactile learning and shape recognition, while also practicing collaboration and communication skills during group activities. Additionally, students will learn to express their reflections and insights through visual and verbal storytelling, building a foundation for deeper cultural appreciation and artistic expression.
Standards
- Common Core - CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.A.2: Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.
- Common Core - CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.B.5: Model shapes in the world by building shapes from components and drawing shapes.
- Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
Products
Throughout the project, children will create a 'Colombian Plant and Animal Mobile' using geometric shapes to represent various Colombian wildlife and flora. They will also contribute to a collaborative group mural, each child adding a section that showcases their understanding of geometric shapes found in indigenous art. By the end of the week, the classroom will transform into a vibrant 'Colombian Safari Art Gallery,' displaying the mobiles and mural, celebrating the children's exploration and creativity.
Launch
Kick off the project with a vibrant 'Colombian Art Parade,' where children craft and wear animal masks adorned with geometric shapes inspired by Colombian wildlife. Encourage them to parade around the classroom, showcasing their creations to peers, and sparking curiosity and excitement for the week's activities. This interactive launch sets the stage for exploration and creativity, inviting children to immerse themselves in the cultural and artistic journey ahead.
Exhibition
Invite parents and community members to the classroom for a 'Colombian Safari Art Gallery' exhibition, where children proudly display their mural sections and Colombian Plant and Animal Mobiles. Encourage students to share stories about the animals and indigenous art they've explored, highlighting the geometric shapes they've identified. Create an interactive space where visitors can engage with the sensory exploration station and provide feedback on the children's creativity and efforts.
