Purpose

This project aims to immerse 4th-grade students in the rich narrative of 'Esperanza Rising' through hands-on, collaborative activities that emphasize community and resilience. By engaging in creative projects, cultural workshops, and reflective practices, students will explore and connect with the novel's themes, fostering a deeper understanding of the power of community support during challenging times. The project culminates in a community exhibition, allowing students to share their insights and celebrate their learning journey with peers, families, and local partners.

Learning goals

Students will explore the themes of community and resilience as depicted in 'Esperanza Rising,' developing an understanding of how these themes manifest in literature and real life. They will engage in creative expression through art and storytelling, enhancing their ability to interpret and convey complex ideas. By collaborating with peers and community partners, students will build cultural awareness and appreciation for diverse perspectives. The project will also foster personal reflection, encouraging students to connect the novel's themes to their own experiences and growth.

Products

Throughout the project, students will collaboratively create a detailed Journey Map of Esperanza's travels, highlighting moments of community support. They will also design a mixed-media mural or collage that visually represents themes of community and resilience from the novel. Each student will maintain a reflection journal, documenting their personal insights and growth. These elements will be compiled into a digital portfolio, showcasing their learning journey. The project will culminate in a Community Connections Festival and Interactive Storytelling Gallery, where students will present their work and engage visitors with interactive storytelling.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Journey Map' activity where students work in small groups to collaboratively map out Esperanza's journey from her home in Mexico to the United States. As they map, students will identify and discuss key moments of community support and resilience that Esperanza experiences, using visuals and brief descriptions.
