Adventures with Authors

Grades K/1

This RPLC unit is designed to share author's craft through the study of high-interest series authors and local community authors. It can be adapted to celebrate underrepresented authors that have made a contribution to your local community or a community of study within a project. This unit will begin with a high-interest author study. Through the lens of this author's books, the students will study story elements. They will also publish book reviews on a class website to share their learning and opinions on the focus author. After the first few weeks, the students will move into a community author study. They will compare the books of local authors or authors within a certain community to learn more about this place. The unit will culminate with the students using the knowledge of story elements and the qualities of books that interest them to write their own fiction stories that bring problems within their community to light.
