Standing UP for What's Right
Grades 2/3
This unit is built on the developmental interest of fairness. It fosters students to think about problems in the world and recognize when things are not fair outside of the classroom. This unit will build students' empathy by using point of view to understand others. At the start of the unit, the students will look at fiction texts to gain a better understanding of characters and understand the various ways of showing courage. This will lead them to recognize their own courageous actions and experiences. They will gain the identities of courageous leaders. With this identity, they will be empowered to identify problems within their local or global communities that must be addressed. Drawing in nonfiction reading skills, the students will learn to read and research using nonfiction texts. As educated advocates, the students will be empowered to use their voices to write persuasive pieces that address these real world issues.
