Purpose

In this immersive project, 10th-grade students dive into the intersections of science fiction, laboratory experiments, and ethics, examining how technological advancements impact human responsibility. Through the creation of dystopian science fiction narratives in Spanish and discussions of real-world case studies, students explore ethical dilemmas and foster critical thinking. The project culminates in collaborative presentations, allowing students to communicate effectively, work with peers, and reflect on their personal growth within the context of innovation and ethics.

Learning goals

Students will analyze and discuss ethical issues within scientific research by critically evaluating science fiction scenarios. They will collaboratively design personalized narratives, integrating ethical themes and scientific discoveries to enhance content expertise and interpersonal communication skills in Spanish. Through project-based learning and peer feedback, students will refine their narratives, practicing self-directed learning and effective communication. The course will culminate in an exhibition, deepening students' understanding of human responsibility in technological innovation.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will craft a comprehensive science fiction story in Spanish, envisioning a dystopian future shaped by unethical laboratory experiments. In tandem, they will develop real-world case presentations examining current ethical dilemmas in science. The final product will be exhibited at the 'Storytelling and Science Night,' where students perform dramatic readings of their stories and present scientific demonstrations. Through this multi-faceted project, students will integrate narrative skills, ethical analysis, and scientific inquiry, culminating in a public exhibition showcasing their learning journey and insights.

Launch

To begin the project, students will engage in a 'Dystopian Reality Day,' rotating through interactive stations featuring simulations of unethical laboratory experiments. These sessions will incorporate real-world scenarios, allowing students to explore ethical dilemmas hands-on while interacting with community partners like local scientists and bioethicists. Through collaborative discussions, students will gather insights to build narratives, understanding the delicate balance of ethics in scientific advancements. This launching activity sets the tone for investigative learning and immerses students in the pressing questions that will drive their science fiction stories.

Exhibition

Students will coordinate a 'Storytelling and Science Night' where they perform dramatic readings of their science fiction narratives in Spanish. They will collaborate with Spanish, science, and English teachers to highlight ethical dilemmas posed in their stories through interactive scientific demonstrations. Presentations will include the students' original dystopian tales alongside real-world case studies, with discussions on resolving identified ethical issues. Community partners, including experts from a university's bioethics department, will be invited to provide insights and engage in panel discussions. This immersive event celebrates student achievements and fosters dialogue on the intersection of ethics, science, and fiction.
