Plan
Week 1
Day 1
Day 2
Day 3
Activities
Navigation Boot Camp Introduction - Introduce the project and discuss the essential question: How do we stay found when things don’t go as planned? Set the stage for the Survival Navigation journey. (20 min)
Compass Skills Workshop - Engage in hands-on activities to learn and practice basic compass skills, including understanding cardinal directions and using a compass to find bearings. (30 min)
Bearing Triangulation Techniques - Learn and practice bearing triangulation through collaborative exercises, understanding how to pinpoint locations on a map using three reference points. (25 min)
Self-Reflection and Feedback Session - Students reflect on their initial compass skills practice, share insights with peers, and receive feedback to refine their techniques. (25 min)
Map-Making Workshop Part 1 - Begin creating mini topographic maps using compasses. Students collaborate to sketch basic outlines of their environment, integrating compass bearings. (25 min)
Exploring Natural Navigation - Introduction to natural navigation techniques, such as using the sun and stars, with a focus on understanding their relevance in survival scenarios. (25 min)
Deliverables
1. Completion of a personalized mini topographic map created using compass and natural elements.
2. A video diary entry documenting initial reflections and demonstrations on bearing triangulation and compass skills.
3. A peer-reviewed map with feedback notes highlighting areas of improvement and successful techniques.
4. A reflection journal entry discussing challenges faced during the Navigation Boot Camp and strategies used to overcome them.
5. Completion of a self-assessment form focusing on navigation skills learned and areas for growth.
Preparation 1. Gather enough compasses for each student to use during activities.
2. Prepare materials for map-making, including paper, pencils, rulers, and colored markers.
3. Set up an outdoor or spacious indoor area for the Navigation Boot Camp with markers indicating cardinal directions.
4. Create a sample mini topographic map to use as a model in the Map-Making Workshop.
5. Compile a list of natural navigation elements students will explore, such as sun position, star maps, and common plant indicators.
6. Organize video recording equipment for students to use in documenting their learning journey.
7. Develop feedback forms for peer and teacher assessments to guide self-directed learning.
Week 2
Day 4
Day 5
Day 6
Activities
Advanced Bearing Triangulation Practice - Students refine their understanding of bearing triangulation by engaging in more complex exercises that involve multiple reference points and movement through varied terrain. (25 min)
Topographic Map Refinement - Continue working on mini topographic maps by incorporating more detailed environmental features. Students practice integrating compass bearings with natural elements to enhance accuracy. (25 min)
Natural Navigation Techniques Workshop - Dive deeper into natural navigation methods, including star positioning and plant indicators. Students learn how to use these techniques in conjunction with compass skills. (30 min)
Group Strategy Session - Collaborate in teams to plan a strategic route using both compass and natural navigation techniques, preparing for a practice survival scenario. (20 min)
Simulated Survival Scenario Role-Play - Apply navigation skills in a hypothetical emergency situation. Teams navigate from a starting point to a safe location, using both compass and natural techniques. (30 min)
Reflection and Feedback Session - Students share experiences from the role-play, providing peer feedback and reflecting on their navigation strategies. Adjust plans based on insights gained. (20 min)
Deliverables
1. Completion of personal video diaries capturing learning experiences and reflections.
2. Mini topographic maps created by each student, accurately reflecting the area's features.
3. Reflective journal entries documenting challenges faced and strategies used in navigation.
4. A brief presentation demonstrating understanding of natural navigation techniques.
5. Self-assessment reports including feedback from peers and teachers.
Preparation 1. Gather multiple compasses for student use.
2. Provide materials for map-making such as graph paper, pencils, rulers, and colored pencils.
3. Select and prepare a safe outdoor area for navigation and map-making activities.
4. Collect reference materials on natural navigation techniques (e.g., books, articles, videos).
5. Organize any necessary permissions for fieldwork activities.
6. Prepare guiding questions and criteria for self-reflection and peer feedback sessions.
7. Set up a digital platform or journal system for students to document their learning journey.
