Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to equip students with advanced navigation skills through immersive, real-world challenges. By engaging in hands-on activities such as bearing triangulation, map-making, and natural navigation techniques, students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-directed learning competencies. This project fosters a sense of identity and belonging as students explore their connection to the environment, culminating in a high-stakes navigation course where they demonstrate their ability to adapt and apply their skills in dynamic scenarios.

Learning goals

Students will master advanced navigation techniques, including bearing triangulation and compass use, to create and interpret topographic maps. They will develop self-directed learning skills by reflecting on their progress and adapting strategies based on feedback. Through critical thinking, students will explore natural navigation methods, enhancing their problem-solving abilities in complex scenarios. They will cultivate an academic mindset by establishing a sense of identity and belonging within their learning community. Effective communication will be honed as students articulate their learning journey and demonstrate their skills in real-world applications.
Standards
  • [National Council for the Social Studies] D2.Geo.3.6-8 - Use paper based and electronic mapping and graphing techniques to represent and analyze spatial patterns of different environmental and cultural characteristics.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Throughout this learning experience, students will create personalized video diaries that capture their navigation journey, showcasing their mastery of compass and natural navigation techniques. By the end of the project, they will produce a live demonstration where they guide visitors through a simulated survival scenario, effectively applying their skills in a real-world context. Additionally, students will participate in the 'Pathfinder Challenge Day,' where they will lead guests through a mini navigation course, highlighting their ability to integrate both compass and natural methods in real-time.

Launch

Begin the project with an immersive "Navigation Boot Camp" where students dive into hands-on activities, mastering bearing triangulation and compass skills. Follow this with a collaborative "Map-Making Workshop," encouraging students to create mini topographic maps using compasses and natural elements. These activities will set the stage for their survival navigation journey, fostering teamwork and creativity while building essential skills.

Exhibition

The project culminates in a 'Pathfinder Challenge Day,' where students take on the role of guides, leading guests through a mini navigation course that combines compass and natural techniques. This interactive exhibition allows students to showcase their navigation skills in real-time, demonstrating their learned competencies to peers, teachers, and community members. Guests will have the opportunity to experience the students' journey, gaining insights into the practical applications of survival navigation. The event fosters a sense of community and achievement, celebrating the students' growth and expertise in a dynamic and engaging way.
