Purpose

Students will explore the interconnectedness of human body systems by creating hands-on models and engaging with professionals, deepening their understanding of digestion and respiration. Through collaborative projects and expert-led activities, they will connect scientific concepts to real-world applications, enhancing their critical thinking and self-advocacy skills. This experience will encourage students to actively participate in their learning journey, fostering a sense of curiosity and a deeper appreciation for how these vital processes impact their everyday lives.

Products

Students will construct a detailed model of the human digestive system using materials such as clay, string, and recycled containers, which they will present to their peers. They will also develop a personalized breathing exercise routine, guided by insights from the respiratory therapist, and document their progress in a reflective breathing journal. Additionally, students will create a collaborative storybook that traces the journey of food through the digestive system, incorporating illustrations and narratives from their 'Food Journey' activity.

Launch

Kick off the lesson with an interactive "Food Journey" activity where students role-play as different parts of the digestive system. Guided by a nutritionist, students will narrate and act out the path of food from ingestion to elimination, using props like yarn for intestines and balloons for the stomach. This engaging storytelling exercise sets the stage for understanding digestion's role in daily life, while also sparking curiosity about respiration.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Body Systems Fair" where they present their digestive system models and demonstrate breathing exercises to classmates, teachers, and family members. Each group will set up a booth with interactive elements, such as hands-on models and storytelling sessions, to engage visitors. The nutritionist and respiratory therapist will be invited to provide feedback and share professional insights, creating a community learning environment.
