Purpose

This project aims to immerse students in the rich cultural heritage of medieval African kingdoms through the art of storytelling and music, inspired by the griots. By engaging in hands-on activities, students will explore the geography, political systems, and achievements of these kingdoms, fostering a deeper understanding of their historical significance. Through collaboration with community partners and interactive exhibitions, students will create and present travel brochures and storytelling performances, connecting past traditions with modern expressions.

Learning goals

Students will explore the role of griots in preserving history and culture through storytelling and music, specifically focusing on the djembe drum and rhyming techniques. They will research medieval African kingdoms, examining their geography, religion, achievements, politics, and social structures to understand their historical significance and contemporary relevance. Through hands-on activities, students will create travel brochures and perform storytelling presentations, integrating rhythm and rhyme to convey the rich cultural heritage of these kingdoms.

Products

Students will create a multimedia presentation that combines storytelling, music, and visuals to highlight the history and culture of their chosen African kingdom. They will design and perform a live storytelling event using rhymes and music inspired by griots to share the achievements and political systems of medieval African kingdoms. Additionally, students will craft tangible travel brochures that incorporate rhyming stories and cultural elements, showcasing reasons to visit their selected kingdom or region. These products will be shared during a 'Griot Gala' and 'Kingdoms Fair,' inviting audiences to explore the rich history and culture through interactive exhibits and performances.

Launch

Kick off the project with a dynamic 'Medieval African Kingdoms Fair' where students rotate through interactive stations, each representing a different kingdom or region. Engage students in activities such as map-making, crafting traditional instruments like the djembe, and learning simple rhymes. Follow this with a 'Griot Gathering,' featuring a guest storyteller who performs traditional African tales and rhythms, and a hands-on drumming workshop to explore storytelling through music.

Exhibition

Host a 'Griot Gala' where students perform their rhyming stories using djembe drums, inviting family and community members to celebrate the storytelling tradition and learn about medieval African kingdoms. Create a 'Rhythm and Rhyme Showcase' where students present their projects in a theatrical performance, combining storytelling, music, and dance to bring the history and culture of African kingdoms to life. Organize a 'Kingdoms Fair' where students set up booths with their travel brochures and interactive exhibits, allowing guests to explore different African kingdoms through music, art, and storytelling. Plan a 'Cultural Caravan' where students lead guided tours of their projects, using their brochures and rhymes to take guests on a journey through the geography, achievements, and political systems of medieval African kingdoms.
