Purpose

This learning experience aims to immerse students in the rich history of medieval Africa, emphasizing the significance of trade routes and cultural exchanges that shaped global history. Through hands-on projects and creative performances, students will explore the legacy of influential figures like Mansa Musa and the thriving city of Timbuktu. By engaging in collaborative and reflective activities, students will deepen their understanding of cultural diversity and historical impact, fostering critical thinking and self-directed learning.

Learning goals

Students will investigate the historical significance of medieval African trade routes, understanding their impact on global cultural exchanges and commerce. They will analyze how figures like Mansa Musa and cities such as Timbuktu contributed to the development of education and trade, fostering a deeper appreciation for Africa's rich history. Through project-based activities, students will enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills while reflecting on their own cultural identities and roles in today's interconnected world.

Products

Students will create a large-scale interactive map of medieval Africa's trade routes, featuring QR codes linked to student-produced videos explaining each route's significance. They will also design and construct a scale model of Timbuktu, using recycled materials to highlight key architectural features and sustainability. These projects will culminate in a 'Mansa Musa's Legacy Exhibition,' where students present multimedia projects to illustrate the impact of Mansa Musa's reign on global trade and education.

Launch

Begin the learning experience with a 'Rhythms of Africa' music and dance workshop, where students immerse themselves in traditional African rhythms and dances. Connect these cultural expressions to the historical trade routes and exchanges of medieval Africa, highlighting their influence on global culture. This engaging activity sets the stage for exploring the rich history and legacy of medieval African trade and scholarship.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Mansa Musa's Legacy Exhibition,' showcasing their multimedia projects that explore the impact of Mansa Musa's reign on trade and education. They will present videos, artwork, and digital presentations, inviting local historians to provide insights and engage in discussions. The exhibition will be an interactive event, allowing students to share their learning journey with peers, family, and community members, fostering a deeper understanding of medieval Africa's influence on the modern world.
