Purpose

This project aims to immerse students in the rich history and culture of medieval African empires through hands-on, experiential learning. By exploring the roles of griots, engaging with traditional music and storytelling, and understanding historical trade dynamics, students will develop a deeper connection to the past and its influence on modern narratives. The project fosters critical thinking, self-directed learning, and effective communication, allowing students to reflect on cultural exchanges and leadership lessons that resonate today.

Learning goals

Students will explore the role of griots in preserving the history and culture of African empires, understanding their influence on modern storytelling and communication. They will investigate the cultural and economic exchanges of the Ghana, Mali, and Songhai empires, connecting these historical dynamics to today's global interactions. Through hands-on activities, students will develop skills in creating traditional African instruments, preparing authentic dishes, and engaging in storytelling, fostering critical thinking, cultural appreciation, and effective communication.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.B.6 - Use similar triangles to explain why the slope m is the same between any two distinct points on a non-vertical line in the coordinate plane; derive the equation y = mx for a line through the origin and the equation y = mx + b for a line intercepting the vertical axis at b.
  • [Computer Science Teachers Association] 2-IC-23 - Describe tradeoffs between allowing information to be public and keeping information private and secure.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.HSS-ID.C.8 - Compute (using technology) and interpret the correlation coefficient of a linear fit.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.HSS-CP.A.5 - Recognize and explain the concepts of conditional probability and independence in everyday language and everyday situations.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.8.F.A.3 - Interpret the equation y = mx + b as defining a linear function, whose graph is a straight line; give examples of functions that are not linear.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will design and construct traditional African instruments such as the djembe, culminating in a community jam session to showcase their craftsmanship and understanding of cultural significance. They will also develop a culinary exhibition, preparing and serving dishes from Ghana, Mali, and Songhai, accompanied by presentations on historical trade routes that influenced these cuisines. Additionally, students will create digital travel brochures highlighting historical and cultural landmarks of African empires, which they will present at a community event to emphasize connections between past and present global interactions.

Launch

Begin the project with a dynamic 'Journey Through Time' event, where students participate in a simulated trade route experience. Collaborate with local museums and cultural experts to create interactive stations that highlight the cultural and economic exchanges of the Ghana, Mali, and Songhai empires. Engage students with hands-on activities, such as crafting trade goods, storytelling sessions, and musical performances, to immerse them in the historical context and set the stage for deeper exploration throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will host a vibrant 'Griots' Storytelling Night' where they reenact the story of Sundiata Keita and The Lion King, inviting community members to enjoy performances and engage in discussions about leadership and historical narratives. Additionally, they will organize a 'Taste of Africa' event, presenting their travel brochures and menus alongside a tasting of dishes prepared with chefs, showcasing the cultural and economic exchanges of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai. These exhibitions will allow students to share their learning through creative performances and culinary experiences, fostering community engagement and appreciation for African history and culture.
