Purpose

This project aims to immerse 5th-grade students in a dynamic exploration of their state's economy and culture through hands-on activities and real-world interactions. By engaging with local business owners, simulating economic roles, and creating a collaborative mural, students will develop a nuanced understanding of the factors shaping their state. The project fosters critical thinking and creativity, allowing students to synthesize research into a state-themed magazine, culminating in a reflective gallery walk to deepen their appreciation of the state's unique identity.

Learning goals

Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of their state's economy and culture by researching key industries and cultural landmarks. They will learn how to analyze data and conduct interviews to gather insights into how local businesses contribute to the economy. Additionally, students will enhance their collaborative skills by creating a state-themed magazine and a mural, visually representing their findings. Through role-playing and simulations, they will gain practical experience in economic transactions and resource management, fostering critical thinking and reflection on the essential question.

Products

Students will create a collaborative mural that visually represents the state's economy and culture, incorporating elements from each student's research and artwork. Additionally, they will develop a state-themed magazine featuring articles, interviews, and artwork that showcase their understanding of the state's economy and culture. Throughout the project, students will also prepare slides for a classroom exhibition, highlighting their favorite aspects of their research and visual representations.

Launch

Begin the project with a "State Economy Simulation" where students assume roles as business owners, government officials, and consumers, engaging in simulated economic transactions. This interactive activity will help students understand the flow of resources and the impact of various industries on the state's economy. By experiencing these roles firsthand, students will gain insights into the key factors influencing their state's economy and culture, setting the stage for their research and creative work throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will host a classroom exhibition where they present their favorite slides from their state-themed magazine, highlighting their research findings and artistic interpretations. The exhibition will include a display of the collaborative mural, showcasing the diverse elements of the state's economy and culture. Local business owners and community partners will be invited to attend, providing students with an opportunity to share their insights and engage in meaningful discussions about their work.
