Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in hands-on exploration of fire-building using natural materials, fostering teamwork, safety awareness, and problem-solving skills. Through activities like a nature scavenger hunt and constructing miniature campfire models, students will develop a deeper understanding of fire safety and the properties of various materials. This project-based approach encourages self-directed learning, critical thinking, and a sense of belonging as students showcase their skills during the Campfire Celebration Day.

Learning goals

Students will learn to safely construct a fire using natural materials, emphasizing teamwork and safety protocols. They will explore how different materials impact fire behavior and identify signs of a safe and effective fire. Through hands-on activities, students will develop problem-solving skills and engage in self-reflection, using feedback to guide their learning process. Additionally, students will cultivate a sense of belonging and identity within their learning community as they share their knowledge and skills with others.
Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] K-2.AF.6.2 - Use tools and/or materials to design and/or build a device that solves a specific problem or a solution to a specific problem.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a 'Miniature Campfire Model' using natural materials collected during a scavenger hunt. They will work in small groups to design and construct their models, demonstrating the steps of building a fire safely. Each group will explain the properties of the materials they chose and how these affect the fire's burning process. These models will be showcased during the 'Campfire Celebration Day,' where students will present their understanding of fire safety and teamwork to family and friends.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a 'Nature Scavenger Hunt' where students explore the schoolyard or a nearby park to collect natural materials like sticks, leaves, and stones. Encourage students to work in small groups, fostering teamwork as they gather items that will be used to build their miniature campfire models. This activity not only sets the stage for hands-on learning but also sparks curiosity and excitement about the project.

Exhibition

Invite families and friends to join the 'Campfire Celebration Day' where students will proudly demonstrate their fire-building skills. Each group will present their 'Miniature Campfire Model,' explaining the materials used and the safety measures they have learned. The event will include live demonstrations of fire-building techniques, emphasizing teamwork and safety, while students answer questions about the properties of different materials and their impact on fire. This celebration provides an opportunity for students to showcase their learning journey and engage with their community.
