Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to explore the mathematical concepts of dilations and congruence through the engaging and interactive platform of Roblox. By applying transformations to game objects, you'll gain a deeper understanding of how these concepts impact design and function within a virtual environment. This project encourages self-directed learning, critical thinking, and collaboration as you reflect on your process and share insights with peers.

Learning goals

Explore how transformations such as dilations, translations, rotations, and reflections can alter game environments in Roblox. Develop skills in documenting and analyzing these transformations using coordinate grids and screenshots. Enhance your ability to reflect critically on the process by writing a journal entry about your experiences and insights. Strengthen your capacity to lead a live demonstration, effectively communicating your design choices and the impact of transformations to peers.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.A.3 - Describe the effect of dilations, translations, rotations, and reflections on two-dimensional figures using coordinates.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.A.4 - Understand that a two-dimensional figure is similar to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations; given two similar two-dimensional figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the similarity between them.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Guide your peers through a live Roblox demonstration, showcasing how transformations like dilations and congruence affect game objects. Capture the process with screenshots and coordinate grids to document the changes. Create a reflective journal entry detailing the challenges and successes encountered during the application of these transformations.

Launch

Begin by immersing yourself in the Roblox game "Steal a Brain Rot" and observe how transformations are used within the game environment. Identify and discuss with peers the instances where dilations, translations, rotations, and reflections occur. Sketch these transformations on coordinate grids to visualize the changes. Use this exploration to brainstorm how you might apply similar transformations in your own Roblox project, setting the stage for your upcoming live demonstration.

Exhibition

Host a virtual showcase where you present your live demonstration in Roblox to classmates and teachers, explaining the transformations applied to the game object. Facilitate a gallery walk where you view and provide feedback on each other's documented processes and outcomes using screenshots and coordinate grids. Encourage peers to ask questions and discuss the design decisions made during the transformations, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
