Purpose

This project aims to deepen students' understanding of multiple meaning signs in ASL, emphasizing cultural and linguistic diversity. By engaging with community partners and reflecting on their learning journey, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The creation of resource videos and workshops will allow students to actively apply their knowledge, fostering a strong academic mindset and self-directed learning. Through interactive exhibitions, students will showcase their growth and contribute to a broader understanding of ASL within their communities.

Learning goals

Students will explore and master multiple meaning signs in ASL, enhancing their ability to sign conceptually and accurately. They will develop critical thinking skills by analyzing how these signs reflect cultural and linguistic diversity, and apply this understanding in the creation of a resource video. Through self-directed learning and community engagement, students will cultivate an academic mindset, build a sense of identity, and strengthen their problem-solving abilities. The project will culminate in students demonstrating their learning through workshops and digital portfolios, showcasing their growth and understanding.

Products

Throughout this 32-week project, students will create a comprehensive digital portfolio that includes video clips of themselves signing multiple meaning ASL signs, monthly reflections on their learning journey, and feedback from community partners. By the end, students will design and conduct a workshop for younger peers, showcasing their understanding and teaching skills. The final product will be a resource video that demonstrates the spelling and correct usage of multiple meaning signs, which will be presented at an exhibition event alongside live demonstrations and interactive activities.

Launch

Begin the project with an interactive workshop led by deaf community members, where students explore the concept of multiple meaning signs through storytelling and role-playing activities. This immersive experience will allow students to witness firsthand how these signs function in real-life contexts, sparking curiosity and setting the stage for their learning journey. Encourage students to document their initial thoughts and questions in a learning journal, which they will revisit throughout the project to track their growth and understanding.

Exhibition

Students will host an interactive showcase where they present their resource videos and perform live demonstrations of multiple meaning signs in ASL. The event will invite community partners, families, and younger students to engage in hands-on activities that highlight the cultural and linguistic diversity of ASL. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from the students' workshops and participate in discussions, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of ASL's nuances.
