Purpose

Students will embark on a creative journey to explore the world of shapes through the lens of storytelling and puppetry, integrating STEM concepts to bring their narratives to life. This project aims to deepen students' understanding of 2D and 3D shapes by actively engaging them in designing and constructing puppets, while also fostering skills in collaboration, communication, and critical thinking. Through a series of hands-on activities, students will connect mathematical concepts to real-world applications, culminating in a puppet show that showcases their learning and creativity.

Learning goals

Students will explore the properties and functions of 2D and 3D shapes through hands-on activities, fostering an understanding of how these shapes can be used in storytelling and puppet creation. They will develop skills in collaboration and communication as they work in teams to design and perform a puppet show, integrating math concepts and engineering principles. By reflecting on their experiences, students will enhance their ability to connect academic skills with creative expression, gaining confidence in using shapes and math to bring stories to life.

Products

Throughout this learning experience, students will create a series of 2D and 3D shape-based puppets that bring their stories to life. They will also develop interactive storyboards that outline their puppet show narratives, integrating math concepts and shape exploration. By the end of the project, students will perform a puppet show that creatively combines storytelling, math, and STEM concepts, showcasing their understanding of shapes and their application in real-world contexts.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'Shape Safari Adventure,' where students explore the classroom and school grounds to identify and collect examples of 2D and 3D shapes. These discoveries will be used to create a collaborative shape collage, sparking inspiration for their puppet designs. This hands-on exploration sets the stage for integrating shapes into storytelling and math concepts, fostering curiosity and excitement for the upcoming activities.

Exhibition

Host a "Puppet Show Extravaganza" where students perform their stories using the puppets they created, inviting families and other classes to attend. Set up a "Shape and Story Gallery" where students display their reflection journals, storyboards, and shape hunt findings, allowing visitors to explore the creative process behind the puppet shows. Encourage students to act as guides, explaining the math and STEM concepts they used in their projects, fostering a sense of pride and ownership in their learning journey.
