"Leadership Launch: ASB Adventure Awaits!"

Camille Valdez

Purpose

The purpose of this project is to equip 6th-grade students with the essential leadership skills required to effectively serve as ASB representatives. Through engaging, hands-on activities, students will explore how to advocate for their peers, build trust, and communicate across diverse groups within their school community. By creating and leading a leadership workshop, students will gain practical experience in these areas, fostering their growth as confident and capable leaders.

Learning goals

Students will develop essential leadership skills such as effective communication, collaboration, and advocacy by engaging in hands-on activities and role-playing scenarios. They will learn to build trust and rapport with peers, ensuring diverse voices are heard in school decisions. Through creating and leading a leadership workshop, students will refine their ability to represent their peers and articulate their ideas confidently.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.6.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.6.4: Present claims and findings, sequencing ideas logically and using pertinent descriptions, facts, and details to accentuate main ideas or themes; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.1: Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.

Products

Throughout the project, students will develop a leadership workshop that includes interactive activities and role-playing scenarios to demonstrate key leadership skills. They will also create a digital portfolio featuring a video presentation that showcases their understanding and application of these skills, along with reflections and feedback from peers and teachers. This portfolio will serve as both a personal record of growth and a tool for sharing their insights with the school community.

Launch

Kick off the project with a "Leadership Challenge Day," where students participate in a series of team-building games and activities designed to highlight key leadership skills such as communication, collaboration, and empathy. Begin with a brief introduction to the essential questions, then divide students into small groups to tackle each challenge. After each activity, facilitate a group discussion to reflect on what skills were used and how they relate to being an effective ASB student. Conclude with a brainstorming session where students identify skills they want to focus on developing throughout the project.

Exhibition

At the end of the project, students will host a Leadership Skills Showcase, inviting peers, teachers, and community members to attend. Each student will present their leadership workshop, demonstrating the skills they have developed through interactive activities and role-playing scenarios. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in these activities, providing real-time feedback and engaging in discussions about effective leadership. The event will culminate with a reflection session, where students share insights from their digital portfolios, highlighting their growth and understanding of leadership in the ASB context.
